Lightning Protection System

Redirecting Energy Surges

A lightning bolt hitting the ground carries with it enough power to rapidly heat the air around it up to 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit disturbing its immediate atmosphere creating a thunderclap. Without a lightning protection equipment, this rapid change in temperature and the fires that are started by lightning strikes result to millions of dollars in damaged properties in the United States every year. Without lightning protection equipment the loss of lives and to properties caused by lighting alone more than surpasses the damages and deaths caused by tornados, floods, hurricanes and earthquakes combined. Yet, of all the natural disasters that are experienced every year, lightning is the only force in nature that man is capable of redirecting through the use of lightning protections systems.

Lightning protection systems have been around for so long, the lightning protection equipment invented by Benjamin Franklin in 1752 have undergone drastic changes. The Benjamin Franklin type of lightning protection are rods that end with a sharp tip that the contention among many quarters is that this lightning protection equipment design actually may invite lightings to strike. In comparison, modern systems of lightning protection systems insure that the energy created by a lightning is not only effectively redirected to the ground, the electrical appliances inside the house are protected as well from its abrupt power surges.

Developments

Modern systems for lightning protection such as those offered by Global Lightning Technologies (M) Sdn Bhd. are the result of years of studies and research on the development of lightning protection equipment based on lightning behavior. It has been simulated on laboratories on different conditions on the discharge of electric fields that the breakthroughs are used to and are adapted to the different kinds of lightning protection and lightning protection equipment that Global Lightning Technologies (M) Sdn Bhd. are currently marketing. Basically though, lightning protection equipment and systems are designed in such ways that the electrical energy created by the lightning finds a path safely to the ground and are dispersed safely. Without a lightning protection system, the power surges into the building passes through the electrical conductors until it reaches the ground. This results in property damages to the electrical components, causes burning and often threatens the life of the buildings residents.

Buildings today are equipped with systems of lightning protection includes the Sears Towers, The Washington Monument, the Whitehouse and almost any building have systems for lightning protection and lightning protection equipment one way or the other.

How does a lightning protection system work?

While Global Lightning Technologies (M) Sdn Bhd, has an array of systems for lightning protection and lightning protection equipment, its notable technologically advanced products worth looking into are The Eritech 3000, The Eritech 2000 and The Eritech 1000. The different types of lightning protection systems are created for different types of applications. However the common attributes of these lightning protection systems and lightning protection equipment are:

Lightning Arrestors – this is a system of lightning protection device are installed into a structures electrical component. This lightning protection equipment serves to protect appliances, computers, pumps and other electric powered equipment from power surges when lightning should strike a power line nearby.

Air Terminals – also commonly known as the lightning rod. This device of a lightning protection system is metal rods that are placed to serve as the initial contact points for lightning. The lightning rod as mentioned are not meant to attract lightning but should a lightning strike in the immediate vicinity of the building or in the structure itself, the lightning will be directed to strike the lightning rods.

Main Conductor Cables – this lightning protection equipment is the part of the lightning protection system is actually braided cables made usually of copper or aluminum. Its main function is to provide direction for the power surge and give the lighting a safe pathway so that it does not injure the inside of a building.

Mounting Hardware – are parts of a lightning protection system. This lightning protection equipment joins terminals, cables, rods and other devices to hold the lightning protection system in place.

Ground rods – are lightning protection equipment that are copper steel alloys driven into the ground to direct the final placement of the energy.

What is notable about modern lightning protection systems and lightning protection equipment such as those created by Global Lighting Technologies are the blunt and rounded tips. This design too is the result of the heavily debated (although for many years unresolved) lightening rod tip design. Early designs with trident pointed tips have the tendency to ionize the air around it and would actually invite lightning strikes.

Lightning protection systems are not meant to arrest lightning. What it is good at is providing a safe path so the energy generated will be dissipated safely. Like any force of nature, lightings will always occur. If a lightning protection system that offers an alternative path is not provided, the lightning will make its own path anyway that almost always results into undesirable effects.

The installation of lightning protection today is monitored by the Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. or a national Fire Protection Agency to insure that standards for the installation of a lightning protection system and the approved lightning protection equipments are met.
